Tyrek Millien and Kannon Foreman proved there’s no place too shaded for the spotlight to shine if one is good — and tough — enough.

The two Copan High senior football players have both been selected for the Eight-Man All-Star game — Foreman as a first-team pick and Millien as an alternate —set to be played in mid-June at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

The gritty pair certainly didn’t make it based on the strength of Hornet football — Copan put together a cumulative 3-18 record the past two seasons and in the two seasons prior to that co-opted with other schools to a shortage of players.

But Foreman — a rugged warrior on the line and Millien — who started at quarterback the past two seasons — obviously made a huge impression that reverberated from Sheets Field and caught the attention of the eight-man grid community.

“Those two played through a lot of stuff,” Copan High head coach Marshall Foreman said. “Tyrek weight all of 126 pounds and carried the ball 20 times a game, took all those hits from bigger players and never wavered.”

Kannon was leg-whipped in game nine of 2021 and spent the next week on crutches — up until game day. Despite the pain, he played in that contest and even scored a touchdown.

“Those two showed their toughness,” coach Foreman said. “They led by example a lot and vocally.”

Coach Foreman also has been selected as a counselor for the game week of the All-Star game.

In related news, several Hornets received district honors following last season.

Millien and Chandler Bauman both were picked at First-Team Defensive Backs, Kannon was named as the First-Team Defensive Athlete, Wyatt Wright was picked at the First-Team Offensive Athlete and Franco Sharp was chosen as the First-Team Underclassmen Defensive End.

Copan recorded a 2-8 record, including wins against South Coffeyville, 64-44, and Deer Creek Lamont, 48-24.

The Hornets also came up short in a fiery shootout against Medford, 94-48.

“Our senior leaders carried us through the year,” coach Foreman said.
