A famous clip from The Simpsons has resurfaced online in the wake of recent headlines.

The moment in question sees Springfield residents gathered to see in a new tax year, happy to be rid of the “horrible” one they’ve just experienced.

But, many on Reddit are applying it to the year 2020, which has been plagued with bad news, including the global coronavirus pandemic and the killing of George Floyd – not to mention Trump‘s response to the anti-racist protests taking place in the US.

“Will this horrible year never end?” the characters can be heard asking as the city clock clock counts down to midnight, only to get stuck with eight seconds to go.

Here, Chief Wiggum steps up to the plate. “We’ve never lost a year before, and I’ll be damned if we’re gonna lose one on my shift,” he says as he shoots the clock, which sends the hand plummeting to midnight.

The moment is taken from 1998 episode, “The Trouble with Trillions”, which is part of the animated show’s ninth season.

Protests have broken out across the US in the wake of the death of the 46-year-old African American Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody. White officer Derek Chauvin was videoed pushing his knee into his neck for over eight minutes.

In a video of the incident, Floyd can be heard pleading with him to stop, saying: “I can’t breathe.”

Chauvin was fired, arrested and charged with third degree murder and manslaughter.

Since the protests, Trump has sporadically tweeted random words and phrases, such as: “STRENGTH!” and “LAW & ORDER”, and calling for cities to call in the National Guard to stop demonstrations.

“These people are ANARCHISTS,” he wrote.

The president said he would to send in the military to “dominate” US citizens unless protests end. He also said that he will set “the most vicious dogs” and use ”the most ominous weapons I have ever seen” on anyone who breaks the makeshift wall erected around the White House.

Anti-racism campaigners are now urging British citizens to “take the knee” on their doorsteps to show support for those protesting systemic racism in America.
