These Horry County restaurants scored low during September inspections

Two Horry County restaurants received low scores due to the presence of roaches, bugs and improperly storing and handling food, according to state reports.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control conducts inspections every month and scores establishments based on their practices.

Here are the lowest scores from Sept. 22 through Sept. 30.

King Sushi, on Highway 17 in Surfside Beach, scored a 71% or “C” during a routine inspection on Sept 26.

An employee was handling vegetables that were intended for salads without any gloves, according to a DHEC report.

The inspector found mold on the packaging of a food item in the facility’s walk in cooler, and no foods were marked with dates.

Soap was not readily available for employees at the sink in the rear part of the restaurant, and the back door was propped open, the report states.

The inside of the ice machine was covered in black slime, the inspector documented.

Fly traps designed for homes were hanging over areas food is prepared. There were also flies landing on surfaces with food in the kitchen and sushi area, according to the report.

It noted bugs on the top of the dish washer and live roaches in other areas of the facility.

Food, including onions, were placed on the floor of the restaurant, according to the report.

It is not clear if the required follow up inspection within 10 days of the routine check has happened and if the grade has been changed.

A manager was not available to comment Monday afternoon.

Lombardo’s Restaurant, on Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach, received a 71% or “C” during a follow up inspection on Sept. 22.

The ice machine was dirty with black slime on the inside, an inspector found.

Chemical sprays did were not properly labeled, and paper towels were not available for employees at the sink near the cook line, according to the report.

There was also live roaches found at the facility, and some food was stored on the floor.

An area on the floor soiled with grease, as well as a large fan, which was placed above a cooler.

A manager said the restaurant underwent another inspection Friday and received a new score of 98%.
