Horry-Georgetown Technical College provides temporary home for Meals on Wheels

CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) – Meals on Wheels of Horry & Georgetown Counties announced Monday that Horry-Georgetown Technical College is providing a temporary home while they continue to search for their forever home.

Meals on Wheels is a faith-based nonprofit that provides home-delivered meals to people they affectionately call “grandparents.”

Meals on Wheels had to temporarily suspend its services in December after their rent rasied from $3,500 to $6,000, forcing them out of the building they were using.

HGTC extended a facility-use agreement for them to use their kitchen area for the next year to allow the non-profit to continue its work.

Michael Snuggs, the CEO of Meals on Wheels, said he’s been praying and asking the community for help for months, and that the new collaboration is a “relief.”

“To know that HGTC is willing to step up and allow us to come in here and operate the way we normally do is huge,” Snuggs said.

Snuggs said they typically receive 40 applications a week and that there are about 4,800 grandparents that need their services weekly.

“We were just trusting in the lord to provide the God place, not the good place, right?” Snuggs said. “This is truly an upgrade from where we were. It’s a blessing. It allows us to operate from a point of excellence in which we always strive to do.”

Not only is HGTC providing their kitchen area, they are also letting Meals on Wheels use two office spaces to conduct orientations, bible studies and board meetings.

They are now accepting new grandparents for service and are starting their operations up again on Feb. 12.
