Horse dies after being struck by deputy vehicle in San Joaquin County

(FOX40.COM) — A horse died after running into a roadway and being struck by a deputy vehicle on Tuesday night, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

The agency said a deputy was near Escalon Bellota Road and Skiff Road, a few miles east of Stockton, when the horse ran out of an orchard and straight into the path of the vehicle.

The deputy was not able to avoid striking the horse and it died “immediately,” the sheriff’s office said.

Pictures shared by the agency show a vehicle with major damage to the front end and the hood.

Officials from the California Highway Patrol and the county Animal Services unit responded to the crash and worked to track down the owner of the horse.

The sheriff’s office said that the deputy and the agency are heartbroken over the loss of the horse.
