Horseheads and Tioga boys wrestling claim Section IV titles

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WETM) – Horseheads and Tioga boys wrestling have added more Section IV hardware to their trophy cases.

Horseheads and Tioga boys wrestling dominated Division I and II of the Section IV wrestling championships in Binghamton. Horseheads claimed another sectional crown in Division I with 5 champions and 5 runners up. Josh Knapp (101), Cody Dale (131), Lucas Mosher (152), Zachary Schrage (160), and Hunter Lavigne (190), all claimed titles for the Blue Raiders. Outside of Horseheads, Elmira’s Ryder DePadua-Reese (116) and J.T. Guyette (124) punched state tournament tickets with titles.

In Division II, Tioga claimed another title with 6 champions and 2 runners-up. Declan McKee (101), Jayden Duncanson (131), Gianni Silvestri (138), Tyler Roe (145), Caden Bellis (152), and Ousmane Duncanson (160), all won titles for the Tigers. Aside from Tioga’s dominance, Waverly’s Troy Beeman took the 285 pound crown. Of other notable placers, Drew Macumber fell via decision to teammate Ousmane Duncanson, while Lucas Hoffman of the Schuyler Storm took 2nd at 166 pounds, and Matthias Welles did the same at 215.

On the girls side, Horseheads finished 2nd to Oneonta for the team title. Behind the 3rd place Union-Endicott Tigers were Waverly in 4th and Tioga in 5th. Waverly’s Mackenzie Laforest took the 235 pound title, while Tioga’s Kyah Nelson won the 165 pound bracket. The pair finished as the only local champions in the girls tournaments. Outside of the top placers, Horseheads’ Sonya Dordoni (94), Harley Ackerman (100), Morgan Evans (138), Tioga’s Kali Bailey (120), Amelia Toomey (126), and Waverly’s Elona Holmes (165), all finished runner-up.

In the Section V boys tournament at SUNY Brockport, local teams did not place in the top-5. Despite coming up short of the team title, individual wresters still impressed and punched tickets to states. Canisteo-Greenwood’s Dylan Depew-Cappadonia (116) and Cade Sands of Addison (138) will each wrestle for a state title after winning their respective weight classes. Just off of the top spot were, C-G’s Connor McCaffrey (108) and Beau Zeh (160). C-G’s Colten Havens (145) made the 2nd place wrestleback, but will have to wrestle on Monday, to determine if he goes to states. Haverling’s Lukas Mills (108) took 3rd.

Next up for the section winners in boys wrestling is the NYSPHSAA Individual Championships at the MVP Arena in Albany. Wrestlers will have a full 2 weeks to prepare, with the state finals taking place February 23rd-24th. More information can be found on the NYSPHSAA website.
