Horseheads’ Zach Schrage earns Athlete of The Week

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Another Horseheads wrestling standout has earned this week’s top honor.

For the second consecutive week, a Horseheads wrestler has been voted as the 18 Sports Athlete of The Week sponsored by Simmons-Rockwell Nissan. This week, Blue Raider Zach Schrage has earned the honor after a strong week on the mats for Horseheads.

Schrage captured the 2024 STAC Wrestling Championship with a pin over Corning’s Clayton Smith in the finals at 5:41. The win for Schrage was extra special as the victory happened at Horseheads Middle School, the site of the this year’s STAC Tournament. Cody Dale won the award last week for Horseheads.

Schrage’s racked up a record of (28-11) on the season and also captured a first place title at the Penfield-Hunter Holiday Tournament in early December. Horseheads and Schrage next play host to Binghamton this Thursday night at home at 6:30 PM. It’s the final dual meet of the year for Horseheads as the team prepares for the postseason.

The Section IV Championships will be held at the Floyd L. Maines Arena in Binghamton on Saturday, February 10. Then, the 2024 New York State Championships will be February 23-24 at MVP Arena in Albany for those who qualify.
