Hoskins earns IHSAA golf honors for eighth-place Warsaw; Penn finishes 12th at state

CARMEL – Warsaw senior golfer Cal Hoskins closed out his high school career with a three-under-par 69 Wednesday that helped him earn all-state honors as the 85th Indiana High School Athletic Association boys state golf championships came to a close at par-72 Prairie View Golf Club.

Hoskins, who opened with a 5-over 77 Tuesday at the difficult Robert Trent Jones Jr. course that played from over 7,000 yards, finished tied for seventh individually with a 2-over 146 total. The Top 10 golfers earn all-state honors. Fairfield High School freshman Brayden Miller just missed earning all-state honors, shooting a final-round 72 that left him tied for 12th at 5-over 149.

No. 1 Guerin Catholic held off No. 3 Westfield – which uses Prairie View as its home course – by one stroke, 602-603, to earn its first team championship a season after finishing second to Center Grove. Jacob Modleski shot 71-145 and Leo Wessel 72-148 for Guerin Catholic to earn all-state honors. Westfield was led by Jake Cesare’s 74-148 total.

Coach Jack Carpenter’s Warsaw Tigers made a run at a top-five finish but fell short, shooting 318 (one stroke better than Tuesday) and finishing eighth in the field of 15 teams with a 637 total, 35 strokes behind Guerin Catholic but just four strokes behind seventh-place Valparaiso. The Vikings were led by sophomore Aidan Gutierrez, who carded a 5-under 67 and tied Indianapolis Cathedral senior Ryan Ford at 2-under 142. Gutierrez then won a playoff to capture medalist honors.

“For the most part I was very pleased,” Carpenter said. “Through 14 holes today the kids were battling, and we were within four shots of fourth place. We just did not close it out; we really struggled down the stretch. The 18th hole absolutely killed us today.”

Only Hoskins managed to birdie the par-5, 547-yard hole. It was his third birdie on a back-nine 33. He played the front side in even-par 36 with a bogey at No. 2 and a birdie at No. 7. Junior No. 5 Jaxson Gould shot 82 for 163 and senior Ben Brander shot 81 for a two-day total of 165.

“I don’t know if the kids got mentally fatigued from the heat – we don’t like to use that as an excuse because it was the same for all of the kids,” Carpenter said. “But I’m proud of their effort. It was a tough two days with the weather and the heat, but they battled well. Ben was very disappointed yesterday shooting 77, but he came back strong today.”

Miller, who started his round on the back nine, doubled the par-4 11th hole and bogeyed the par-4 17th to turn in 3-over 39. But birdies at Nos. 3, 6 and 7 enabled the Fairfield freshman to finish at even-par for the day.

Coach Tony Polizzotto’s Penn Kingsmen managed to shoot eight strokes better Wednesday, finishing with a 326 total that left them in 12th place at 660. Junior No. 3 Jack Urbanski and sophomore No. 4 Dylan Mounts shot closing 80s to lead the Kingsmen Wednesday, and another junior, No. 5 Jack Stewart, shot 85 to give Polizzotto optimism going forward.

“Jack and Dylan were pretty tight the first day,” Polizzotto said. “They came back today and played pretty good. Their scores didn’t really reflect the way they hit it. And Jack (Stewart) hit it pretty good, too. He shot 46 going out but 39 coming back.”

Mounts had an eagle and two birdies in his round, while Urbanski made one birdie.

Senior Ryan Hahaj, who shot a final-round 82, and senior Maddox Snyder (84) led the Kingsmen with totals of 163 and 164, respectively, one stroke ahead of Urbanski and four ahead of Mounts.
