Jul. 4—MONROE — A fast start and five extra-base hits led PCM's softball team to a win over South Hamilton on Friday.

The Mustangs led 4-0 after two innings and then went back in front with a four-run third during a 10-6 home victory over the Hawks in Heart of Iowa Conference action.

PCM swept the season series against South Hamilton after winning 8-6 in Jewell earlier this season.

"It was a great win to end the regular season," PCM softball coach Shaun Hudnut said. "The zone was tight, which forced both teams to come over the heart of the plate a lot tonight.

"We were fortunate to pound out 15 hits and score a few more runs than they did."

PCM finished the HOIC season in third place at 9-3. Saydel won the league at 11-1 and Roland-Story finished second at 10-2.

The offensive night included a home run by Joslin Briles and doubles by Riley Johannes, RaeAnn Duinink, Sidney Shaver and Riley DeVore.

The double by Johannes ties a school record for doubles in a season with 14. She also finished with three hits, one run and one RBI.

"It's always fun to watch a player chase a record and be able to put her name in the books," Hudnut said.

PCM (14-14) scored three in the first, one in the second and four in the third.

In the first, Shaver doubled and scored when Belle Hudnut reached on an error trying to bunt. Johannes' RBI double made it 2-0 and Duinink made it 3-0 with an RBI single.

Duinink finished with three hits, one run and three RBIs in the win. In two games against South Hamilton this season, Duinink tallied seven hits and seven RBIs.

DeVore singled in the second, moved up a base on a ground out to third and then scored on Belle Hudnut's two-out RBI single.

Briles hit her fifth home run of the season in the third. Lark Drake walked, went to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Duinink.

A Paige Steenhoek RBI single scored Duinink. Steenhoek's courtesy runner — Reese Palm — moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice bunt by DeVore.

PCM scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to stay in front. DeVore doubled in the fifth and courtesy runner Palm scored on Eliana Buswell's RBI single. In the sixth, Briles walked and pinch runner Skylar Burns advanced to second on a passed ball. She scored on Duinink's RBI double to center.

DeVore finished with two hits, one run and one RBI. Shaver also had two hits and scored one run.

Steenhoek started in the circle and got the win after allowing five runs — three earned — on three hits with one strikeout, two walks and one hit batter in three innings.

DeVore got the four-inning save after allowing no earned runs on two hits with one strikeout, four walks and one hit batter.

"Riley DeVore gave us four solid innings of relief tonight," Coach Hudnut said. "We went to her in the fourth knowing we had to throw the ball over the heart of the plate. She threw her change well enough to keep South Hamilton off balance."

Belle Hudnut finished with one hit, one run and one RBI, Drake added one hit, one run and one walk and Steenhoek and Buswell both had one hit and one RBI.

Palm scored two runs and Burns was plated once.

Half of South Hamilton's runs were unearned because PCM committed four errors. The Hawks (10-17 overall, 3-9 in conference play) had five hits and one error in the loss.
