Hot chicken joint opening in Kansas City’s Westport. Sign a waiver for hottest tenders
Dave’s Hot Chicken will open its second Kansas City area location Friday.
The latest restaurant from the fast-growing California-based chain is in Westport, at 4121 Broadway Blvd.
The menu is simple: chicken tenders (served with sliced bread and pickles), chicken sliders (served with kale slaw), fries, mac and cheese and milkshakes. The seven spice levels range from “No spice” to “Reaper,” which requires customers to sign a waiver.
“We brine the chicken in pickle juice, which is what makes the meat so tender, and we add salt, pepper and mustard for flavor,” said Curt Staab, who along with three brothers also operate a Dave’s in Omaha and another in Overland Park, which opened at 9097 Metcalf Ave. in August.
The Westport space has an occupancy of 33, with eight small tables for customers. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
Dave’s now has more than 120 locations in the U.S. It was founded in Los Angeles in 2017 as a parking lot pop-up and expanded to a brick-and-mortar location the following year. In 2021, Samuel L. Jackson and Drake purchased minority stakes in the company.
Staab said he has yet to meet Drake.
“But I do hear his music all the time coming out of the kitchen here,” he said.
