Hot Springs getting ready for solar eclipse

HOT SPRINGS Ark.- Plenty of cities in central Arkansas are preparing for the solar eclipse in April and Hot Springs is no different.

Hot Springs is preparing for the more than 100,000 people estimated to visit the town during the 2024 total solar eclipse, which is double the town’s population.

“We can do some estimations based on where we are at in the fact that we’re one of only two national parks in the country that’s in the path of totality, that it’s spring break season already, that it’s race season,” Visit Hot Springs Marketing Director Bill Solleder said.

Officials said the city-wide event begins Thursday, April 4, and ends Monday, April 8.

Visitors can meet NASA officials on Bath House Row as they experience the event with those in attendance. NASA will begin doing community outreach on Thursday, while also conducting a study on animal behaviors when it goes dark during the day.

Garvin Woodlawn Gardens, Hot Springs National Park, Oaklawn Racing and Casino and more will be hosting events and viewing parties.

“What a great place Hot Springs National Park is. It’s known for its natural beauty. It’s known for the thermal natural water,” Solleder said. “You know what a great place to watch a natural event, like the total solar eclipse.”
