In the dead of summer, it can be a major challenge to find relief from the sun’s scorching heat beating down mercilessly — especially in areas with little to no green canopy space around.

These areas are known as "heat islands."

In a heat island, daytime temperatures can get as much as 20 degrees higher than places that have more vegetation.

During the early August heat wave, the Taunton Daily Gazette recorded temperatures in Taunton, both in heat islands in the downtown area and in greener spots in East Taunton. See what the results look like here, and what the city is doing to try to keep Taunton cooler.
