A new hotel at Carowinds, near Cabela’s, could come to Fort Mill. Here are the details

A new hotel beside Carowinds could add more options for park guests, and serve a growing business community in its area of Fort Mill.

Property owner Cabela’s Wholesale Inc. applied to rezone almost three acres beside the Cabela’s store in Fort Mill, just beside the two-state theme park, to allow a new hotel. The planning commission in York County unanimously voted in favor of that zoning change Monday night.

Final say will come from York County Council.

The Cabelas Drive site where the hotel would go sits just south of the sporting goods store, and behind restaurant sites Moe’s Southwest Grill and Famous Dave’s barbecue, near Carowinds Boulevard.

Plans involve a four-story hotel with 107 rooms.

A submitted sketch plan shows the new hotel closest to the restaurants neighboring it. Parking would face Cabelas Drive and Monorail Drive, with more on the Cabela’s store site site. Submitted documents list a 60,000-square-foot hotel. They don’t list a name brand.

Carowinds sits on the South Carolina and North Carolina state line, in both Fort Mill and Charlotte. The more than 400-acre theme park and water park has long been a draw for overnight stays.

Most of the 18 Fort Mill hotels listed by Visit York County are in the Carowinds area. They range from the Clarion property built in 1975 to newer options like TownePlace Suites by Marriott and an avid Hotel.

There are other options nearby, including the Springhill Suites by Marriott opened on the North Carolina side and the Camp Wilderness option — both opened by Carowinds.

Fort Mill and Rock Hill have been at the front of a surge of new hotel growth in recent years. There are ongoing plans for two new hotels in Riverwalk and another in Lake Wylie.

If the project moves through three needed county council readings and a public hearing as scheduled, a final decision on the rezoning could come in September.
