Hotel fire Sunday morning is 137th investigated Abilene blaze this year

Abilene Fire Department personnel responded to a 9:30 a.m. call Sunday for a hotel fire in the 1500 block of East Stamford Street in northeast Abilene, near Interstate 20.

Smoke was seen coming from an open door of an upstairs room. A second alarm was made to boost personnel at the scene. However, the initial crew contained the fire to the room.

Residents evacuated, either on their own or with AFD assistance − no one was in the room on fire. There were no injuries.

Damage estimate is $10,000.

The cause of the fire, 137th this year according to the AFD, is being investigated.

AFD stays busy in 2022

As of Friday, there had been 136 fire calls handled by Abilene, six in August, the first 224 days of the year.
