Hotel roof collapses over indoor pool, kills boy on holiday weekend, Nebraska cops say

A child became trapped under debris in a pool room when part of a hotel roof collapsed, according to Nebraska authorities.

The boy died before he was found by first responders, police said.

The York Police Department was called to the Hampton Inn shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, July 3, according to a news release.

Officers and other first responders “found the roof had collapsed into the pool and around the walk-way in the pool area,” according to the York News-Times. The hotel has an indoor pool.

Everyone else was safely evacuated, police said, and the area was secured.

About 40 hotel guests needed to be relocated, according to KLKN.

The fatal roof collapse is under investigation, police said, and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting.

“The Police Department wishes to extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased,” according to the news release.

Authorities have not publicly identified the child.

York is about 50 miles west of Lincoln.
