You might want to stock up on sunscreen as a heatwave is on its way for most of the UK this week, with highs expected to reach 34c on Wednesday and Thursday. Some weather apps are even predicting extremes of 37c in London on Thursday but this has not been confirmed by the Met Office. The hottest day of the year so far was recorded in late June, with 34c.

The soaring temperatures will spread north from Europe across the UK, Wales and Scotland, where highs will peak over 30c across central and southern areas.

"Temperatures will increase daily across much of England and Wales as hot air is drawn up from France and Spain. Temperatures could reach 34°C by Wednesday in parts of central, southern or eastern areas and heatwave thresholds are likely to be reached in some places," Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page says.

While the heatwave will bring plenty of summer warmth (and an excuse for more ice cream), there is also a warning of thunderstorms and unsettled weather. According to the Met Office, there are yellow severe weather warnings for thunderstorms over Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland and for heavy rain for western Scotland over the coming few days.

The Met Office is also warning people to take extra care on the road as there may be additional congestion due to the school holidays.

Rod Dennis from RAC explained: "As thousands of families take to the car to head off on holiday drivers are going to have to take particular care and could have, not just queues of traffic, but also heavy rain and gusty winds, to contend with, at least at the start of the weekend."

When travelling in the heat, remember to always take additional water for both you and your pets. Congestion could mean traffic is busier than normal and may result in long periods of time in the car. It's always best to check the route before you travel.
