Houma woman dies in single-vehicle crash

A Houma woman has died from injuries she suffered in a crash last week, State Police said.

The crash claimed the life of 49-year-old Ona Franklin.

According to State Police, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Jan. 17 on Southdown Mandalay Road west of the South Hollywood Road Extension in Houma.

Franklin was traveling west on Southdown Mandalay Road in a 2005 Hyundai Accent. For unknown reasons, she veered off the roadway to the right while in a curve, traveled back onto the road, crossed the center line and drove off the road to the left before overturning.

The car then came to a rest on its roof, State Police said.

Franklin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected and suffered severe injuries, police said. She was hospitalized in New Orleans, where she died from her injuries Wednesday.

Impairment is unknown and the crash remains under investigation.

The incident marks the second fatal crash this year in the Troop C area, which covers Lafourche, Terrebonne and Assumption parishes, and the west banks of St. James and St. John parishes.
