Representative Hank Johnson (D., Ga.) on Thursday suggested classified documents found in President Biden’s Wilmington, Del., home could have been “planted” there.

A set of classified records from Biden’s time as vice president were first recovered by Biden’s lawyers on November 2 at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank that served as Biden’s private office from 2017 to 2019 after his time as vice president came to an end.

The White House Counsel’s office then searched Biden’s homes in Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington this week and discovered “a small number of additional Obama-Biden administration records with classified markings,” the vast majority of which were found in a storage space in Biden’s Wilmington garage, White House lawyers said.

Alleged classified documents showing up allegedly in the possession of Joseph Biden — there’s so much that needs to be investigated and that’s what I call for, is for everything to be investigated but I’m suspicious of the timing of it,” Johnson told Fox News’ Hillary Vaughn. “I’m also aware of the fact that things can be planted on people… things can be planted in places and then discovered conveniently. That may be what has occurred here. I’m not ruling that out. But I’m open in terms of the investigation needs to be investigated.”

However, Biden acknowledged to Fox News’s Peter Doocy that the documents were in a locked garage and his Corvette.

“Classified material next to your Corvette? What were you thinking?” Doocy asked Biden during a press briefing.

“By the way, my corvette’s in a locked garage,” Biden joked before adding, “People know that I take classified documents and classified material seriously. I also said we’re cooperating fully with the Justice Department’s review.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday appointed Robert Hur as special counsel to investigate the classified documents.

Johnson reacted to the development by telling Fox News it is “refreshing to see the Department of Justice restored from its politicization during the Trump years, and I applaud Attorney General Garland for acting swiftly in appointing a special counsel to investigate the Biden document discoveries.”

“Based on what we know, there is a big difference between the Trump and Biden document cases,” Johnson told the outlet, referring to the investigation into classified documents recovered from former president Donald Trump’s personal residence at Mar-a-Lago. “There remains much we don’t know about the Biden document discoveries, and it’s too early to reach any conclusions. I am confident, however, that the process has begun to ensure that we get to the truth, and that justice will be done.”

The Presidential Records Act requires all presidential and vice-presidential records to be transferred to the National Archives at the end of an administration.
