An apparent explosion late Saturday near Carbondale in northern Osage County left a house destroyed and a man critically hurt, said Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells.

The victim, a 62-year-old man, was taken by helicopter ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center at Kansas City, Kan., he said.

The man's identity wasn't being made public Sunday morning.

Deputies were called shortly before 7 p.m. the the scene at 11600 S. Indian Hills Road, where they arrived to find the house destroyed and on fire, Wells said.

The explosion's cause was being investigated by the sheriff's office and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office, he said.
