House of the Dragon season 1 spoilers follow.

House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine has opened up about his experience watching back his final scene as King Viserys.

The actor confessed he "burst into tears" over the deteriorating appearance of his character before his death because it reminded him of a heartbreaking family loss.

"I didn’t watch episode eight but my wife had watched it, and my daughter, and they were pretty upset with it," Considine explained while speaking on The Adam Buxton Podcast. "My wife said, 'Just watch the end'.

"Years ago, I’d watched my dad die of cancer and he just went downhill rapidly from being diagnosed to being on death's door. You know, he became skeletal so rapidly.

"So, when [my wife] showed me that end thing and my face came up I just burst into tears because I looked the image of my dad when he was dying, the image of him, and it was shocking. It was really, really shocking to me.

"I’d put so much of my mum’s characteristics into this character, Viserys, but when I saw that I thought 'That’s my dad' and it was terrifying. So, it was pretty impactful stuff."

Reflecting on his experience filming Viserys’ death scene, Considine revealed that he "put everything into that character" which involved "a lot of days shooting from lying in that bed".

Despite finding Viserys’ final moments in the Game of Thrones prequel series being too challenging for him to watch, the actor looks back fondly on his time playing the fictional monarch.

"The King Viserys character in House of the Dragon, I think that’s probably the greatest character I’ve ever played in my eyes," he revealed. "The story was right. The character was right."

The HBO fantasy series drew its first season to a close earlier this year, and a second is already in the works.

While there’s currently no confirmed release date for House of the Dragon season 2, HBO chief Casey Bloys previously hinted the new episodes could arrive at some point in 2024.

House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Season 2 has been confirmed. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
