After three weeks of paralysis in Congress, the House has elected a new speaker, and business can resume.

Lawmakers voted in U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, a relatively low-profile social conservative and House Republicans' fourth nominee to replace ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, by a 220-209 vote Wednesday.

Johnson's election comes after a topsy-turvy Tuesday in the House. The Republicans' third nominee, Tom Emmer of Minnesota, dropped out mere hours after being nominated, as a flank of right-wing Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, spoke out against him.

The GOP holds a slim enough majority of the House that a speaker hopeful could only afford to lose four Republican votes, given all Democrats were aligned behind Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

On Thursday, Republicans were for the first time unified in their support of their nominee.

Johnson, vice chair of the House Republican Conference, is a fervent supporter of former President Donald Trump who played a leadership role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

"Mike Johnson is a man of integrity and a principled conservative," U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, a Republican from Columbia City, Indiana, said late Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter. "I will be proud to cast my vote on behalf of northeast Indiana for him on the floor tomorrow to make him the next Speaker of the House!"

Early Wednesday morning, Trump lent Johnson support on Truth Social.

Here's how Indiana's congressional delegation voted:

  • Frank Mrvan, Democrat, 1st Congressional District: Jeffries

  • Rudy Yakym, Republican, 2nd Congressional District: Johnson

  • Jim Banks, Republican, 3rd Congressional District: Johnson

  • James Baird, Republican, 4th Congressional District: Johnson

  • Victoria Spartz, Republican, 5th Congressional District: Johnson

  • Greg Pence, Republican, 6th Congressional District: Johnson

  • Andre Carson, Democrat, 7th Congressional District: Jeffries

  • Larry Bucshon, Republican, 8th Congressional District: Johnson

  • Erin Houchin, Republican, 9th Congressional District: Johnson
