UPDATE: Water heater cause of house fire near downtown Redding, authorities say
A faulty water heater caused a house fire near downtown Redding on Friday morning, investigators said.
The fire was dispatched just after 8:30 a.m. in the 2030 block of Placer Street between Willis and Chestnut streets.
It took crews about 25 minutes to contain the blaze at a two-story house, but firefighters had to close down Placer Street in the area to do so.
The Redding Fire Department said in a news release that the fire was caused by the failure of a water heater near the laundry room. The laundry room and kitchen were badly damaged and the blaze caused an estimated $60,000 in damage.
Two people who were inside the house were able to get out before firefighters arrived.
There were no injuries.
