House passes bill to let DC redevelop RFK stadium

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The U.S. House passed a bill that would allow D.C. to develop the RFK Stadium site.

The D.C. RFK Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act (H.R. 4984) was passed by a vote of 348-55 on Wednesday evening. It will still need to clear the Senate in order to allow D.C. to revitalize the space for commercial and residential use.

The legislation would lease the land to D.C. for 99 years, allowing the District to use it for a new stadium to lure the Commanders back, construct new housing and expand retail spaces, for example.

Congress to vote on bill to lease RFK stadium to DC

“It’s a great victory for D.C. It takes a lot of unused land and makes good use of it. We can’t build high so we can’t afford to have any unused land. There were some who voted against us. But, it’s a great victory for the city,” said Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC).

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser applauded the passage, stating:

“Tonight’s vote was a significant step forward in our efforts to unlock the full potential of the RFK Campus — for our residents and visitors, the community, and DC’s Comeback. H.R. 4984 received overwhelming, bipartisan support and we want to thank House Oversight Chair James Comer, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and all of the co-sponsors for championing this legislation. We look forward to working with the Senate to swiftly advance this legislation.”
