House under construction in IOW engulfed in flames

SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) – Fire crews responded to a residential fire in Isle of Wight County Monday morning.

According to officials, the Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department, Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Isle of Wight Fire Rescue and Surry Volunteer Fire Department all responded to a residential fire at approximately 7:21 a.m. on Creekway Drive.

Crews arrived to find a large house, unoccupied and still under construction, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Due to the intensity of the fire and heat, crews were forced to work outside of the home.

The fire was marked under control by 8:44 a.m., and no injuries have been reported. Crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
