House of Usher boss responds to Seven Deadly Sins fan theory

The Fall of the House of Usher creator Mike Flanagan has opened up about the fan theory regarding the Seven Deadly Sins, claiming that the theory was not his intention.
The Netflix show adapts multiple works by Edgar Allan Poe and one fan theory speculated that the show was depicting the Seven Deadly Sins, with the Usher children being connected to those sins: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth.
However, in a recent Tumblr post, Flanagan has shot down the theory, stating that it was never his intention and pointing out that David Fincher's movie Se7en did that story first.

"I’ve heard this a few times today – I’m sorry to say that it was NOT our intention to have the Usher kids represent the 7 deadly sins. Roderick only has 6 children, for one thing, and I got most of my religious horror out of my system in Midnight Mass," Flanagan said.
"(Plus, no one will ever do the seven deadly sins better than Se7en, so why bother?). I’m always happy to see people digging into the work, and typically don’t want to dissuade someone from whatever meaning they find there, but in this case I’d be lying if I said that was our intention."
The Netflix horror show, which stars Mark Hamill, has been celebrated for its queerness, while the ending offered up a whole host of mysteries.

Meanwhile, Flanagan recently commented on the black cat episode controversy, which saw the gruesome "death" of Pluto the cat.
"The Black Cat was written by Edgar Allan Poe. In HIS version, a cat is killed," Flanagan wrote on X.
"In MY version, the killing of the cat is revealed to be a hallucination. In MY version, the cat is alive and well. So who hates cats? :)"
The Fall of the House of Usher is now available to stream on Netflix.
