House vote to impeach Mayorkas fails

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – House Republicans failed in their effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

It was a stunning defeat for those trying to impeach the homeland security secretary, a handful of Republicans joined Democrats to kill the measure.

The White House and the Department of Homeland Security called the vote baseless and called on congressional Republicans to support the Senate’s bipartisan border security bill.

“It’s the toughest, fairest law that’s ever been proposed relative to the border,” said President Joe Biden.

The president’s plea came as more House and Senate Republicans oppose the Senate-negotiated deal.

President Biden is blaming former president Donald Trump for trying to kill it.

“He’d rather weaponize this issue than actually solve it,” he said.

The bill is getting criticism from both progressives and conservatives in the Senate.

“We have no real chance here to make a law,” said Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Lead democratic negotiator of the bill, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy slammed Republicans for changing their support.

“It is doubly outrageous for them to now oppose the very bill that they begged us to craft,” said Murphy.

The Senate is expected to vote on the border bill Wednesday afternoon.
