Housing proposal draws concerns

Mar. 26—WINDHAM — A proposed residential development on Northridge Drive in Windham has many concerned, evidenced by testimony at the town's zoning board this week.

At Thursday's Windham Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, several community members expressed concern about the environmental impacts of an apartment complex the town wants because of the tax revenue it would bring.

Ultimately, no decision was made and the PZC continued the in- person public hearing to April 14 at 7 p. m. at Windham Town Hall in Willimantic.

A.R. Building Co. Inc. has applied for a special permit application to build a 136-unit residential community with 17 buildings at 9 Northridge Drive in North Windham.

Half of those units would be one- bedroom apartments and half would be two-bedroom apartments. Bill Sweeney, an attorney from TCORS of New London, which is representing the applicant, said the development, which includes 17 buildings, would cover just under 23 acres on a parcel full of forestry.

It is located near Klaus Larsen Roofing, Home Depot and Walmart.

Under the town's zoning regulations, a special permit is required to build multi- family residential dwellings in the C- 4 zone.
