Houston-based medical supply company wants to move headquarters and plant to Branchburg

BRANCHBURG – A medical supply company with $150 million in annual revenue wants to move its corporate headquarters and packaging facility to the Route 22 site of The Golf Range at Branchburg.

Jacob Jeremias, of Abaline Supply Co., told the township Planning Board on Tuesday that he wants to move the company's headquarters to the 26.56-acre property which once was the site of the Somerville Drive-In.

Abaline Supply is the contract buyer of the property and the proposed 311,040-square-foot building to be built by Transwestern Development Corp., based in Houston. Transwestern has a contract to buy the golf range.

Jeremias said the facility would create 50-60 new jobs in the assembly, packaging and distribution of medical supplies, such as gloves, gowns and other personal protective equipment, to hospitals in the New York Metropolitan Area. The company also distributes holiday products to dollar stores, he said.

Trucks would deliver the materials from 7 a.m. to noon, Jeremias explained, and then workers would package and assemble the products for delivery to hospitals. The facility will be open six days a week with three shifts of workers on most days.

Jeremias said his father started the business out of his car's trunk in 1975.

Transwestern had originally wanted to build a logistics center on the property but the township adopted an ordinance prohibiting warehouse in the zone.

Transwestern then filed suit against the township in Superior Court, but the suit was "amicably” resolved in October, said Christopher Erd, Abaline's lawyer, and Transwestern was able to find another buyer.

Erd said Abaline's proposal conforms to the township zoning law and may require no variances. The golf range, he said, is a non-conforming use.

The Planning Board will continue hearing the proposal in February.
