1. University of Houston - Clear Lake Alumni Hardik Jani used biotech skills learned in his Master of Science in Biotechnology program to help create a COVID vaccine at Moderna. Jani came to UHCH straight from India. Prior to Moderna, Jani worked at a startup company called Base Pair Biotechnologies in Houston after graduation. (University of Houston - Clear Lake)

2. 26-year-old Jeho Martinez has been charged with murder and felony injury to a child in the death of Zyre Ornelas. Court documents say Martinez is accused of beating his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter to death and attempted to blame her 5-year-old brother as a cause for her injuries. (Click2Houston)

3. The nationwide blood shortage is affecting Houston-area cancer patients. They want to remind locals that when they donate blood, it helps save the lives of cancer patients. "Doctors have to use blood transfusions to essentially bring your immune system back up, so you can live and thrive," says cancer patient Bev Saltzman Lewyn. (Fox 26 Houston)

4. A grand jury convened Friday to decide whether or not criminal charges against Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson will move forward. The NFL star also faced depositions in two civil suits filed against him at the same time. (KHOU 11)

5. More than 100 license plate reader cameras are set to be up and running in Houston's Council District J, according to Councilmember Edward Pollard, who represents the district. Pollard says the cameras are part of an effort to combat the uptick in crime and plays into the "One Safe Houston" crime reduction plan. (ABC 13)
