Houthi supporters protest U.S. backing of Saudi coalition

The streets of Yemen's capital Sanaa saw thousands of Houthi supporters carry out protests against U.S., with many denouncing Washington's policies toward the country and its support of a Saudi-coalition.

Major General Yahya Al-Mahdi, who chairs the Security Committee of the Houthi-led Shura Council, was among the protesters.

The armed conflict, in which the Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 against the Houthis to restore the internationally recognized government, has killed tens of thousands and caused a humanitarian crisis.

It is seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has been in a military stalemate for years.

Efforts led by the United Nations and the United States to engineer a ceasefire in Yemen have stalled.
