How young golf phenom Rickie Fowler overcomes challenges

Rickie Fowler is no stranger to feeling the pressure.

One of the tour’s brightest stars, Fowler is a fan favorite known for his colorful Puma clothes and ability to be in contention in the final rounds of golf’s biggest tournaments. The 30-year-old has amassed eight wins on the tour and a staggering $36.4 million in career earnings.

Fowler will likely enter the Masters in April ranked in the top 10 golf rankings after a blistering start to the year. He notched a win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a second place at The Honda Classic and a fourth place finish at the Shriners Hospital Children’s Open.

The mostly self-taught Fowler also has another distinction: He is viewed as one of the best players around to not win a major championship. Some golf experts argue that the the distinction has caused Fowler to put undue pressure on himself in key times during the majors.

Fowler has been known to brush these critics aside and overcome challenges on the course with even more intense practice.

“There are definitely times when you have to take two steps backwards to take one step forward in life, and certainly in golf,” Fowler told Yahoo Finance. “You have to be willing to take a hit and work through the tough times to come out on top.”

Meanwhile, Fowler also has his mind on the future.

The golf star is engaged to be married soon and would like to have a family in the not too distant future. “I have a couple financial guys that help me with some stuff. My portfolio is pretty strong,” Fowler said, adding he is becoming more aggressive with his investments.

“Life is going to be changing in the next year — money allocation will be different,” he said.
