The first voyage of Ukraine’s Food Train embarked on Nov. 23, bringing traditional American Thanksgiving dishes like baked turkey and pumpkin pie to the people of the frontline town of Izyum.

A cooperation between the Ukrainian state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ) and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, which fully funded the train's construction and operation, the first trip saw the train travel from Kyiv through Kharkiv to Izyum.

"I plan to ride the Food Train in December and offer food to all Ukrainians along the frontline. It will be a victory," said Howard Buffett, son of billionaire U.S. investor Warren Buffett.

The traditional American holiday has a special meaning these days, said UZ’s Board Chairman Yevhen Lyashchenko, thanking the entire democratic world for supporting Ukraine.

"Together with the Howard Buffett Foundation, we are launching this unique train today. The food cooked in it will be delivered as a token of gratitude to those who help our defenders every day in the frontline regions: employees of the State Emergency Service, police, doctors, railway workers, volunteers," said Oleksandr Kubrakov, who serves as Ukraine’s Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development Minister and Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration.

The Food Train, capable of producing approximately 10,000 meals per day, consists of 6 cars:

  • A generator car (~400 kW + own gas station for autonomous operation)

  • A refrigerator car with a freezer for food storage

  • A car with a cold kitchen for pre-processing of products

  • A car with a hot kitchen for the preparation of the final dishes

  • A car for train staff with shower and washing machine

  • A baggage car with 27,000 liters of water with filtration and pumping stations.

The train can operate autonomously for 5-7 days and its equipment allows it to prepare complete full-course meals: soups, cereals, salads, meats, etc. Special thermoboxes installed inside the train make it easy to transport ready-made portioned food containers from the train kitchen to the end consumer.
