Howard County Times high school sports Team of the Week and game balls for Jan. 29-Feb. 3

Each week, the Howard County Times will pick a Team of the Week and hand out three game balls to the top performers through all sports across the county.

Team of the Week

Wilde Lake cheerleading: The Wildecats won the Howard County winter cheerleading title on Thursday at Mt. Hebron. Wilde Lake (116.5 points) narrowly edged out Glenelg (116) to secure the victory.

Honorable mention

Reservoir girls basketball: The Gators had a standout week with three victories, including a pair over defending state champions in Glen Burnie and Howard. Reservoir dominated Glen Burnie, 53-29, and came back from behind to defeat the Lions, 51-45, in overtime.

Wilde Lake boys basketball: The Wildecats earned a pair of county victories over Hammond and Centennial to move back to .500 on the season.

Game ball No. 1

Jasmin Shelton, Reservoir, girls basketball, junior

Shelton was a force in the paint for the Gators in their three victories last week. She began with a 12-point, eight-rebound, four-assist, two-steal performance against Glen Burnie. She then scored 10 points, six of which came in overtime, and added nine rebounds and a trio of steals in a win over Howard. Shelton concluded the week tying a game high with 12 points in a win over Marriotts Ridge.

Alicia Hall, Oakland Mills, girls indoor track and field, junior

Hall played an integral part in the Scorpions girls securing the Howard County team title. In the triple jump, she jumped 39 feet, setting an all-time Howard County record on her first attempt. That distance puts her No. 1 in Maryland and No. 20 in the nation She also finished third in the long jump (17-2.25).

Game ball No. 3

Logan Ruehl, Mt. Hebron, boys indoor track and field, senior

In his first indoor Howard County championships, Ruehl won the shot put, throwing a distance of 49 feet, 2 inches. That marked a personal record distance for the senior, who took second in the opening Howard County meet of the season.
