Howard Street in Spartanburg to close for demolition of Business 85 overpass

Howard Street at Business 85 in Spartanburg will be closed Friday through Monday, May 13-16, for demolition of the Business 85 overpass, according to the S.C. Department of Transportation.

A detour for motorists using Howard Street takes them to nearby Hearon Circle at Asheville Highway and Business 85, DOT resident construction engineer Joseph Fowler said.

The demolition is part of a project to replace the Buffington Road/Norfolk Southern Railroad and the Howard Street bridges between Hearon Circle and New Cut Road. The project is expected to be finished by the summer of 2023.

Both bridges, constructed more than 60 years ago, are are structurally deficient, and do not meet the current SCDOT design standards, according to SCDOT.
