HS BASKETBALL: Antoniacci has big night in leading Riverside past Dunmore

Jan. 14—TAYLOR — Frankie Antoniacci turned in a near-perfect performance.

In front of a charged-up crowd that included a rowdy student section, the Riverside senior connected on 10 of 12 shots, going 5 for 5 on 3-pointers, and hitting all seven of his free throws for 32 points.

Antoniacci's effort catapulted the seventh-ranked Vikings to a 60-48 win over Dunmore on Friday in a Lackawanna Division III boys basketball game.

It is the sixth win in the last seven games for Riverside, which improved to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the division.

"Some days you are just feeling it," Antoniacci said. "It seemed every time I shot the ball, it was good."

"I am not usually like that, but it was one of those days."

In addition to his scoring, Antoniacci contributed 10 defensive rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. His teammate Connor McNally scored six points and had six rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Matthew Godlewski also scored six points and had three assists.

"It takes a lot of pressure off us when Frankie gets hot scoring the ball," McNally said. "I am happy with the way we played. We kept fending them off. They kept switching defenses, and we stayed calm and played well."

Dunmore was the aggressor and had the upper hand early in building a 12-5 lead. Cullen Smith scored seven straight points in the surge.

But Antoniacci went to work by igniting a 9-0 run to close out the quarter for a 14-12 lead. He finished the first with eight points and didn't cool off at all in the second.

Smith, who tried to counter Antoniacci, started the second with a 3-pointer for 10 points, which gave Dunmore the lead back at 15-14.

Antoniacci made that short-lived with five straight points. Later in the quarter, he drilled a deep 3-pointer, and Connor Monahan and McNally also had 3-pointers as the Vikings went to the half with a 30-19 advantage.

"Whenever you hit 3s, the crowd goes crazy," Antoniacci said. "They came out hot and we had to match them, and we did."

In the half, Antoniacci made all six of his shots and had 16 points and carried the momentum into the third with five straight points in the opening minutes for a 35-19 lead. He moved to seven straight makes before he suffered his first miss on a short jumper.

"He played as good a high school basketball game as I have seen in a long time," Dunmore coach Kevin Clark said. "It was one of those things where as soon as it came off his fingers, it was going down. It was his night."

Dunmore (4-8, 0-3) refused to throw in the towel. Max Forgione, Nico Ruggiero and freshman Nate Aviles, who made a 3-pointer from the corner, fueled a 7-0 run that drew the Bucks to within 35-26. But Antoniacci confidently swished another 3-pointer, McNally scored, and Richie Kostoff had three offensive rebounds and an assist to stave off the attack, and Riverside finished the third with a 43-30 lead.

"Frankie is really stepping up here lately," Riverside coach Josh Aniska said of Antoniacci, who has 855 points in his career and scored 54 in the last two games. "He had a couple games where he wasn't happy with his performance. He has accepted the challenge to be the guy for us, and he knows that time is running out and he only has so many games left.

"He is leaving it all on the floor for us."

Dunmore picked up its intensity in the fourth and, again, chipped away at the deficit, only to see Antoniacci keep spoiling the comebacks. After Antoniacci scored the first four points of the quarter, Forgione, Smith and Ruggiero, who finished with 17 points and had 10 in the fourth, helped the Bucks close to within 54-46 with 2:17 to play.

However, Antoniacci went to the line and hit a pair of free throws, and Godlewski and McNally also made free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

"Our effort and our comeback in the fourth were a good sign," Clark said. "Our pressure helped us a ton, but it was a little too late at that point. The resolve of our kids and the intensity is something we will be able to build off."
