HS BASKETBALL: Mid Valley's Tanner transfers to Perkiomen School

Jun. 17—Gabe Tanner is taking his talents to Pennsburg.

The Times-Tribune All-Region basketball player has transferred from Mid Valley to the Perkiomen School, which is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory, boarding school. He enters with sophomore athletic eligibility and a junior year academic course load.

"The coach (Thomas) Baudinet contacted me after they saw me play in a tournament and said he would love to have me as part of their program," Tanner said Thursday night. "It is an outstanding opportunity for me, and I visited the campus. I enjoyed the players and it's just a great fit, so I made the decision to enroll."

Tanner is at a camp this week at the school and is working out with the varsity team. Perkiomen School has a national varsity team, a varsity team and a junior varsity team.

The national team won 26 games last season, playing at showcases and tournaments across the country.

Last season, Tanner was named the Lackawanna League Division III player of the year as a sophomore. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 13.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.3 blocks per game while leading the Spartans to the Division III championship, the District 2 Class 4A championship game and the PIAA playoffs.

His finishes his Mid Valley career with 560 points.

"It was a very difficult decision to leave Mid Valley," Tanner, 16, said. "I have been playing basketball with those guys my whole life. I just have a great opportunity and I want to take advantage of it and develop my game."

Mid Valley coach Michael Abda thanked Tanner for his contributions to the Spartans.

"On behalf of all of our coaches and players, we wish Gabe the best of luck in the next chapter of his academic and athletic careers," Abda said. "We thank him for all of the hard work and dedication he's shown over the years in our program and for always positively representing the Mid Valley School District."
