Friday Night Highlights: Scores, stats and recaps from Week 1 football action!

WARMINSTER — Council Rock South senior linebacker Connor Omlor calls the defensive signals, which are the alignments the coaches want. However, in the Golden Hawks' opener at William Tennent, he had some ideas of his own as well.

"I talk to (the defensive coaches) all the time. We talk on the sidelines" said the 5-foot-10 Omlor. "We made adjustments at halftime and we were calling out blitzes and putting on the pressure."

After trailing at halftime, CR South rallied for a 21-7 victory over the Panthers on Friday night in the opening game for both teams."

Tennent scored on its first possession, capped by a 45-yard pass from quarterback Zach Stanfield to Liam Gibson. But the Golden Hawks defense never let them score again, sacking Stanfield five times, four in the second half.

Three things we’ve learned

1. Following a 2-9 season, Council Rock South looks more competitive. Its lines are stout and the Golden Hawks have a strong defense that should keep them in any game.

2. William Tennent is well-coached and scrappy. The Golden Hawks did not sew up the game until a 21-yard TD run by Chase Myers with 2:12 to go.

3. Friday Night Lights are still popular. Although a week before Labor Day weekend, both the home and away stands were relatively full.

Game balls:

  • Chase Myers, CR South: Ran for 118 yards on 16 carries and scored one touchdown. He was able to use his speed to break off long runs.

  • Zach Stanfield, William Tennent, QB: The senior completed 12 of 17 passes for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception despite being under a ferocious rush most of the time. Was 6 for 8 for 114 yards in the first half.

  • Jake Hemple, CR South, DB: He intercepted a pass at midfield in the fourth quarter as he jumped a route. Tennent was only down by a touchdown at that point.

They said it:

"A lot of credit to the (defensive) line," Omlor said. "They really brought the pressure (on the Tennent quarterback)."
