HS Football Roundup: RV rallies in fourth quarter for win

MANSFIELD — River Valley needed to rally to run its record to 2-0 to start the high school football season, winning 44-28.

The Vikings trailed on the road at Madison Comprehensive 28-24 with 7:38 left, when senior All-Ohio quarterback Cayden Shidone took over the game.

First, he ran for a 44-yard touchdown less than a minute after the Rams took the lead. Then with 3:21 to go, he found Grant Butler for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Shidone capped it by hitting younger brother Keyan Shidone for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

It was a six-touchdown performance for the elder Shidone, running for three and passing for three. He started it with a 4-yard run and score with 11:25 to go in the first quarter. He connected with Keyan on fourth down for an 11-yard touchdown and also ran in a 5-yard TD.

RV's Hudson Pollock kicked a 30-yard field goal with nine minute left in the first half. Madison's Noah Finley blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt, and Peyton Myers returned it 68 yards for a touchdown and a 16-10 lead with just 21 seconds before halftime.

RV answered with two straight scores to start the third quarter, but the Rams (0-2) also scored twice to take a 28-24 lead with 7:38 left in the game.

Cayden Shidone was 22-for-45 passing for 364 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, plus added 101 yards on 18 carries for three other scores. Keyan Shidone made 10 catches for 212 yards and two TDs.

Elgin 30, Cardington 14

The Comets broke open a close game in the second half to earn their first win of the season. Tied at 6-6 after the first quarter, Elgin led 12-6 at halftime and 18-14 after three quarters.

Breckin Dugan and Kaiden Luikart carried the load with Dugan ending with 91 yards rushing and Luikart with 82 yards. Brody Wood was 2 of 3 passing for 23 yards. On defense, Elgin got 11 tackles and two for loss from Landon Shepherd, eight tackles and two for loss from Caleb Atha and two sacks from Kenny Slone.

Cardington (0-2) got 86 yards on 21 carries and a TD from Kaiden Beech, and Wyatt Denney had 14 touches for 61 yards and a TD. Beech was 7 of 13 passing for 77 yards with Denney catching a 32-yard pass and Journey Williamson getting two grabs for 29 yards..

North Union 35, Triad 0

The Wildcats went on the road and came away with a 2-0 record as Owen Davis came back to the offense to produce 167 yards rushing on 15 carries for three touchdowns.

Aaron Vanderpool backed him with 67 yards on five carries, while Cayden Lassiter threw for 92 yards on 5 of 11 passing, hitting Trey Bossaller for a 60-yard TD before halftime. It was scoreless after the first quarter, but Davis scored a pair of touchdowns before the Bossaller strike to make it 21-0 at the half.

North Union rolled up 423 yards of total offense and 16 first downs, while its defense held Triad (0-2) to eight first downs and 73 yards of total offense. Landon Converse led the Wildcats with six tackles.

Northmor 28, South Central 20

The Golden Knights (2-0) were down 13-0 late in the first half before scoring two touchdowns in the final 1:40 for a 14-13 lead. South Central (1-1) scored with 4:52 left in the third period for a 20-14 edge, but Northmor answered back.

With 43 seconds left in the third period, Max Lower scored his third TD rom 2-yards away for a 21-20 lead, and teammate Paul Cramer helped put it away with a 13-yard TD run with 6:02 in the contest.

Lower scored on a 9-yard run and caught a 23-yard TD pass from A.J. Bower. He ended with 82 yards on 21 carries and two receptions for 35 yards. Cramer backed him with 60 yards on 5 carries. Bower was 7 of 15 for 140 yards, and Hunter Fulk made four receptions for 88 yards.

South Central's Brandon Mitchell was 19 of 28 passing with three touchdowns and 221 yards, while Isaac Blair made 11 catches for 197 yards.

Bohdi Workman, C.J. Stoney and Bo Landin all had interceptions for the Northmor defense.

Wooster Triway 26, Highland 14

Triway (1-1) pulled away late at home against the Scots (1-1).

The Titans went for 20 first downs and 347 total yards with 265 coming in the air on 36 of 51 passing. Highland countered with 10 first downs and 238 total yards with 153 on the ground. Highland was hurt by losing two fumbles.

Highland's Dane Nauman rushed 23 times for 136 yards and both scores, while Kolton Stover was 12 of 21 passing for 85 yards. Zach Schmidt and Hayden Kline combined for eight catches for 63 yards.

On defense for the Scots, Kline had 11 tackles, and Ladon Hayes and Aron West had eight tackles, while Landon Pedigo recovered a fumble.

Upper Sandusky 26, Mount Gilead 6

Mount Gilead quarterback Matthew Bland ran for 193 yards and threw for 122 more, but it wasn't enough for the Indians (1-1). Blank scored a rushing touchdown and was 7 of 17 passing. Garrett George added 13 carries for 46 yards, while Owen High made three receptions for 71 yards.

For Upper (1-1), Kaden Holman ran for 82 yards and two scores and was 17 of 22 passing for 272 yards and two more TDs. Ethan Hill caught six passes for 132 yards and the two touchdowns.

"I give a lot of credit to Upper's defense. They really move and get after it in the box. Kaden Holman is a fine quarterback, and we knew our defense was going to get tested," MG coach Mike Reid said. "Overall, I felt our defense played very well, especially considering some of the tough spots our turnovers put us in. Unfortunately, a mistake or two on defense turns into a touchdown or two for the other team."
