HS FOOTBALL: Several LFC players commit to schools; Dream Game coaches named

Apr. 10—Abington Heights senior defensive back Christian Henzes is continuing his academic and athletic careers at the University of Rochester.

Henzes, who missed playing in his sophomore season when the school district canceled contact sports that fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is a two-time Lackawanna Football Conference Division I first-team all-star in the secondary.

As a two-year starter, Henzes had 34 solo tackles and 36 assists as a senior, with four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and two passes defended.

In his junior year, he had 48 solo tackles and 19 assists with one tackle for loss, an interception, a fumble recovery and one forced fumble for the Comets.

Rochester is an NCAA Division III program that finished 3-7 last season and 1-5 in the University Athletic Association.

All-stars to Muhlenberg

A pair of LFC all-stars will continue their academic and athletic careers at Muhlenberg College.

Wallenpaupack senior Sam Filip is a 6-2, 360-pound defensive lineman and LFC Division I honorable mention all-star last season. He started for four seasons with the Buckhorns and had 113 total tackles with 10.5 for loss.

As a senior, Filip had 20 solo tackles and 20 assists.

Riverside senior Nicholas D'Amico earned LFC Division III first-team all-star honors as a kicker. He helped the Vikings reach the District 2 Class 2A playoffs last season by making 35 extra points and four field goals, including a season-best and school-record 47-yard kick against Susquehanna.

D'Amico also had eight touchbacks and 12 kickoffs inside the 5-yard line. In his career, he scored 59 extra points and had 74 kicking points.

Muhlenberg is an NCAA Division III program that finished 7-4 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial Conference.

Malone to King's

Dunmore senior fullback Josh Malone committed to continue his academic and athletic careers at King's College.

Malone, who was an LFC Division II honorable mention all-star, ran for 251 yards on 30 carries and scored a touchdown as a senior when he led the Bucks to the District 2 Class 2A championship game.

As a junior, Malone had 144 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Dumnore reached the District 2 Class 2A final against Lackawanna Trail.

King's College is an NCAA Division III program that finished 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the MAC. The Monarchs reached the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series against Ursinus College and lost, 24-13, last season.

Dream Game

The 89th Scranton Lions Club Dream Game is scheduled for July 19 at 7 p.m. at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium.

North Pocono coach Greg Dolhon will guide the City all-stars, while Mid Valley coach Stan Yanoski will lead the County team.

Dolhon has coached the Trojans for 11 seasons and has a career record of 55-61. He led North Pocono to the District 2 Class 4A championship in 2016.

Yanoski, a graduate of Mid Valley, has led the Spartans for the last three seasons and has a record of 12-16. In his second season, Mid Valley reached the District 2 Class 3A semifinals.
