HS Rewind: Charlotte-area schools advance in NCHSAA soccer; NCHSAA golf, East-West hoops

Ten Charlotte-area schools have advanced to the second round of the 4A state playoffs in girls’ soccer, after posting victories Monday night in first-round matches.

The group includes four each from Mecklenburg and Union counties, and two from Iredell County.

Another 15 teams advanced with victories in the 3A, 2A and 1A divisions.

Among the 4A winners were conference champions Hough (Queen City 3A-4A), Ardrey Kell (SoMeck 4A), Weddington (Southern Carolina 4A), and Lake Norman (Greater Metro 4 4A).

Second-round matches are set for Thursday night.

Lexi Birtwistle, South Point girls soccer: three goals, two assists in an 18-0 win over West Charlotte.

Sophia Broz, Providence girls soccer: three assists, goal in a 7-3 win over Sun Valley.

Peyton Case, Asheville girls soccer: scored four goals in a 7-1 win over Mallard Creek.

Lily Heaslet, South Meck girls soccer: five saves in a 2-0 win over Hickory Ridge.

Jessica Matson, Marvin Ridge girls soccer: three goals, assist in 7-0 win over South Iredell.

4A PLAYOFFS

Ardrey Kell 9, Independence 0: This was a statement victory for the sixth-seeded Knights (16-3-1), who will host Marvin Ridge in the second round. Taylor Suarez scored two goals, including one on a penalty kick, and Elie Newman added two goals.

Asheville 7, Mallard Creek 1: Freshman Peyton Case scored four times, as the hosts ended Mallard Creek’s season with a 12-6-1 mark.

Cox Mill 3, Reagan 2: The Chargers (12-6-3) play at second-seeded Watauga in the second round.

Cuthbertson 5, A.C. Reynolds 0: The Cavaliers (14-4-2) travel to Hough in the second round.

Hough 2, Hopewell 0: The Huskies (19-3-1) won this north Mecklenburg derby, breaking a scoreless halftime tie with goals from Madison Waldron and Kylee Thompson in the final 40 minutes.

Lake Norman 3, Mooresville 0: Lake Norman (13-5-2) completed a three-match sweep against fellow Greater Metro 4 Conference member Mooresville. Next up: a home match Thursday against Providence.

Marvin Ridge 7, South Iredell 0: The Mavericks (12-6-2) were led by Jessica Matson, who had three goals and an assist. Isabella Zicchinolfi added a goal and two assists, and goalkeeper Lia Doohan got the shutout.

Northwest Guilford 2, Myers Park 1: Charlotte Simas scored for the Mustangs, who finished with an 11-6-3 record.

Porter Ridge 1, Page 0: The visiting Pirates (9-10-2) pulled one of the night’s biggest upsets, downing fifth-seeded Page. Porter Ridge travels to Northwest Guilford (15-2-1) in the second round.

Providence 7, Sun Valley 3: The Panthers (16-3-2) cruised in this wide-open match. Bella Dragone had two goals and an assist, and Sophia Broz added a goal and three assists. Sun Valley’s Nicole Kleyner had two goals and an assist.

South Mecklenburg 2, Hickory Ridge 0: Anna Cantey and Mary Liese Grier scored for the Sabres (16-3-1), who travel to West Forsyth in the second round. Goalkeeper Lily Heaslet made five saves for the shutout.

T.C. Roberson 1, Charlotte Catholic 1: Roberson (20-5-1) advanced by beating the Cougars (12-5-1) 3-1 on penalty kicks.

Weddington 6, Mount Tabor 0: The Warriors (18-4), top-seeded in the West, got two goals and two assists from Kalea Pace. Paige Santos added a goal and an assist. Weddington will host Northern Guilford (13-4-1) in the second round.

West Forsyth 6, Piedmont 1: The Panthers, who gained a playoff spot despite finishing fifth in the Southern Carolina 4A Conference, finished with a 12-10 mark.

3A PLAYOFFS

Ashe County 3, Forestview 0: The Jaguars played hard, totaling nine shots on goal. But Ashe County goalkeeper Dakota Peterman stopped them all.

Central Academy 2, Ledford 0: The Cougars (12-10-1) travel to Enka in the second round Thursday.

Central Cabarrus 3, Pisgah 0: The Vikings improved to 14-2-1 and play at Hickory on Thursday.

East Lincoln 5, Fred T. Foard 0: Goalkeeper Lily Cleeland made five saves for the shutout, and Mikeala Cowgill led the offense with a pair of goals. The Mustangs (18-4-2) visit Atkins in Round 2.

Lake Norman Charter 9, Ashbrook 0: The third-seeded Knights (17-1-2) cruised, behind Rylie Cook’s four goals. Cook also had an assist. Madison Buffington added two goals and an assist for the Knights, who host Crest on Thursday.

St. Stephens 4, Stuart Cramer 1: The Storm got a goal from Abi Bourque in this road loss.

South Point 18, West Charlotte 0: The top-seeded Raiders pummeled 32nd seed West Charlotte, behind Lexi Birtwistle (three goals, two assists) and Jesson Cadiane (three goals). South Point (18-0-3) hosts North Henderson in the second round.

West Henderson 2, North Lincoln 0: North Lincoln was held to one shot on goal

2A PLAYOFFS

Community School of Davidson 8, East Surry 0: The Spartans (11-8-2) will travel to unbeaten West Davidson (25-0) in the second round.

East Davidson 2, Lincolnton 1

East Gaston 3, Randleman 1: The Warriors (17-1-2) advanced to a second-round matchup at home against East Davidson.

Forest Hills 2, Surry Central 1: The Yellow Jackets (15-4-1) host fellow Rocky River 2A-3A member West Stanly on Thursday.

Jay M. Robinson 2, East Rutherford 0: Rylee Borsuk scored a pair of first-half goals, and Robinson (13-7-1) advanced to a second-round match at Madison County.

Lincoln Charter 3, Bandys 2: Miranda Beauford scored two goals, and McKenna Verdi added a goal and an assist in this upset victory. The Eagles (8-9-2) visit Wilkes Central in the second round.

Pine Lake Prep 11, McMichael 0: The top-seeded Pride (17-1-2) steamrolled McMichael, as Ansley Nixdorf and Maddyson Kerley each scored three times.

1A PLAYOFFS

Bradford Prep 2, Highland Tech 1 (OT): The Rams (9-6-1) will travel to top-seeded Bishop McGuinness in the second round.

Cherokee 2, Queen’s Grant Charter 2: Cherokee won this match 4-3 on penalty kicks. The teams finished in a 1-1 tie after regulation. Cherokee scored in the first overtime period, but the Stallions tied it in the second extra session, forcing the penalty-kick decision.

Christ the King 10, Alleghany 0: The second-seeded Crusaders (12-2-3) breezed to victory. They’ll host Uwharrie Charter in the second round.

Mountain Island Charter 9, Avery County 0: The Raptors (16-4) were led by Jaida McGrew, with five goals and an assist. Hilary Schmitz added two goals and two assists for the Raptors, who visit Draughn in the second round.

N.C. Leadership Academy 5, Piedmont Community Charter 0

Union Academy 12, East Wilkes 0: The Cardinal (19-3) got five goals from JaLynn Kendall, and Nina Fraticelli added a goal and five assists. Union Academy host+s Bethany Community on Thursday.

NCHSAA Golf: Providence star just misses 4A state title

Apex Friendship’s Daniel McBrien won the N.C. 4A state golf championship in dramatic fashion Tuesday.

Playing at Pinehurt No. 8, Nelson shot a 2-over-par 74 in round 2. That allowed Providence’s Colin Salema to tie him for first. Salema shot a 3-under-69 on Monday and a 1-under-71 Tuesday. McBrien was 2-over-par in regulation play Tuesday.

But McBrien won on the second sudden death playoff hole.

Hough’s Jude Carper was tie for fourth with Marvin Ridge’s Jack Wieleer. Mers Park’s Eli Schmidly finished tied for sixth.

Pinecrest won the team title, just two shots ahead of Green Hope. Marvin Ridge finished third and Charlotte Catholic finished fifth. Ardrey Kell was seventh.

In the 3A finals at Foxfire, Fayetteville Sanford shot by 31 shots over Stuart Carmer. Lake Norman Charter finished eighth.

Fred T. Foard’s David Gee won in a playoff. Gee shot a 6-under-66 on the first day but shot 74 in regulation on Day 2.

Northwest Cabarrus’ Cooper Burris tied for sixth.

East Surry won the 2A state title at Longleaf Country Club by 44 shots over Seaforth. Pine Lake Prep was fourth. East Surry’s Pennson Badgett won the state title after shooting a two-day total of 4-under-par. Pine Lake Prep’s Cooper Mizelle moved up two spots after the first round to finish in fifth place. Mizelle shot even-par both days.

In 1A, Mitchell won the boys team title by 20 strokes at Pinehurst No. 6 over South Stanly. Cherryville was the highest-finishing Observer-area team. The Ironmen finished third.

Mitchell’s Connor Warren backed up his 7-under-par 65 first round with a 4-under-par second round and won by 14 shots. Eastern Randolph’s Connor Carter was second (plus 3). Langtree Charter’s Sam Skoog (plug 9) finished in a tie for fourth.
