A roundup of high school games played and track meets run on Thursday, March 10, and Friday, March 11:

Baseball

Canterbury 10, Seacrest Country Day 0

After a shutout performance in Friday night’s matchup against Seacrest Country Day, the Cougars captured their second straight Private 8 Championship.

More importantly, they were able to celebrate the championship with teammate Austin Schrowe, who returned to the dugout with his teammates following a brief stint away from the team due to illness.

“He's here with us though so it's better than not,” Canterbury coach Frank Turco said. “It was heavy hearts before when he was in the hospital, but he's here with us now. He motivates us to do our thing and he's always the positive guy.”

“Even before he was sick, he was always that loose, free goofy guy that loves everybody and loves the game. It's one of those things where we're starting to draw from him.”

And draw from him they did, Turco’s team put on one of the best performances thus far this season, according to the head coach.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cougars put four runs on the board in the second inning. They would follow that up with a two-run inning, thanks to a two-run homer from Bryce Habuda after he smashed the ball over the center-field fence.

“We came out swinging the bats really well, I was proud of them,” Turco said. “We just started seeing short to the ball and trying to work the middle of the field, which is something we've been trying to preach and not having success with it. We put hits back-to-back, which we haven't done all year at all. It's kind of nice to see a few hits string together.”

Canterbury's Kevin Gonzales (11) warms up during the Seacrest Country Day and Canterbury private 8 baseball championship on Friday, March 11, 2022 at Rutenberg Park in Fort Myers, Fla.

Pitcher Kevin Gonzales got the start on the mound for the Cougars and did not disappoint. In four innings, the junior allowed two hits and no runs. Having fellow pitcher Austin Shrowe in attendance was something Gonzales fed off of during his performance.

“Before every inning, I go to the back of the mound and I draw 16 his number walk up, pray to God then great innings come out of it,” Gonzales said. “He's definitely a crucial piece of our team, he’s our ace and we can't wait to have him back.”

With the win, the team returned to the .500 mark at 4-4. Turco believes the best is yet to come from his young team.

“We're moving in the right direction, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Turco. “We're going to make sure we stay humble and hungry. I always say humble and hungry and we're going to try to build off what we did tonight.”

St. John Neumann 12, CSN 1: The Celtics took care of business in the Private 8 matchup in their win over the Seahawks. TJ Ninchritz led Neumann going 3-for-3 at-bat, while throwing a shutout on the mound in four innings. Luis Gomez went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run and Nick Sikowski added two hits and three RBI.

Naples 2, Estero 0: Johnny King drove in both of the Naples (9-0) runs with a double to edge out the Wildcats. Florida commit Reilly Witmer went five innings, while striking out six. USF commit Jason Bello earned the save for the Golden Eagles with a pair of scoreless frames.

Softball

North Fort Myers 4, Mariner 2: The Red Knights used inside-the-park home runs from Abigail Hynes and Mia Lane to take down the Tritons for their sixth straight win. Kendall Wylie got the win in the circle for the Red Knights, surrendering zero runs on three hits over six innings, striking out seven.

Naples 12, Palmetto Ridge 2: The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten (6-0) behind an excellent pitching performance from UCF commit Macy Miles who struck out eight batters.

Lehigh 22, Island Coast 0: Abigail Reyna hit 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles to lead the Lightning over the Gators.

ECS 7, Bishop Verot 2: The Sentinels won the Private 8 softball championship.

Fort Myers 11, Bonita Springs 6: Emma O'Connell's three-run home run in the bottom of the first inginted the Green Wave. Alexa Bent knocked in three runs and Sage Rodmyer and Julia Knower each contributed with two RBI. Nyiah Van Hoose went 2 for 4 with a home run for Bonita Springs.

Kylee Vagle was the winning pitcher for Fort Myers.

Boys Lacrosse

Immokalee 15, Taravella 4: Immokalee bounced back from a tough loss Thursday night with a big win against the Trojans out of Coral Springs on Friday. Jorge Aguliar led the team with five goals, while Eduardo Chavez, and Mario Morales secured hat tricks.

“We’re a little banged up and had to call some JV guys up to make their first varsity starts,” Immokalee coach Scott Rickard said. “The young kids responded to the challenge and played well. It was a good team win to head into spring break for some much-needed rest. When we get back, we have a very tough Barron Collier team waiting for us.”

Girls Lacrosse

Newsome 17, CSN 6: Emma Smith netted three goals and had one assist in the Seahawks' loss to the Wolves.
