HS Roundup: Philo claims Yinger title; New Lex second at Licking Valley

HANOVER — In an event loaded with local teams, seniors Ethan Burkhart and Hunter Rose claimed titles to lead New Lexington to a second-place finish among 16 teams on Saturday at the Licking Valley Invitational.

Burkhart outlasted Carrollton's Landon Jenkins, 3-0, in the finals at 106, which came after he dominated pool play and earned a first-period pin over Marengo Highland's Konner Blaney in the semifinals.

“I’ve seen him before and he’s a tough wrestler," Burkhart said of Jenkins. "It was by far my toughest match. This is always a good tournament.”

Burkhart has battled sickness recently and didn't wrestle in the Panthers' previous match, but he proved more than up to the task in a dominant showing on Saturday.

"I want to be in the state finals, but I have to work on some things, like my gas tank and my balance," Burkhart said. "As of right now, I think I’m doing pretty well.”

Rose was equally impressive at 165, earning a 14-12 decision over Newark Catholic's Brendan Sheehan in the finals after recording a first-period pin against Vincent Warren's Jason Williams. He was also unbeaten in pool play.

A freshman, Bates improved to 17-1. He was voted the No. 3 seed.

“I was able to make him take some fake shots (in the finals) and got him tired," Bates said. "I have some confidence right now. I was able to go 8-0 at Wheeling (West Virginia) in a duals tournament. I want to make the state, but I still have a lot to work on, like snapdowns, feet movement and taking shots.”
