HS Roundup: Zanesville holds off Watkins; Maysville rolls

PATASKALA — Zanesville was part of another down-to-the-wire contest on Friday night.

Yet, the visiting Blue Devils prevailed again behind a 21-point, seven-rebound effort by senior guard Rashaud Hampton in a 48-45 victory against Watkins Memorial in a Licking County League-Buckeye Division contest.

It was the second straight win for Zanesville, which lost 11 of 12 to start the season. This is the first season sweep of an opponent since River View in 2019-20 and the first time for back-to-back wins since February 2022.

Maddox Hayes added seven points and 14 rebounds, Drew Doyle chipped in seven counters and four assists, Mikey Johnson scored six and Xavier Riley corralled five boards for the winners.

Johnson sank two free throws with :00.5 left to push a one-point lead to three and seal the win.

It was a close game early with Hampton scoring at the first-quarter buzzer to tie the game at 13. The Blue Devils built a 27-19 halftime lead after Hampton had 11 points in the second quarter and Johnson knocked down a 3.

The Division I Warriors used a 14-4 run to start the third to take a 33-31 advantage, but Hampton scored a pair of inside hoops to put the Blue Devils ahead, 35-33, going to the fourth.

Doyle had a key three-point play, Riley drilled a 3 and the Blue Devils made enough free throws to seal the win.

Maysville 91, Meadowbrook 25: Hayden Jarrett knocked down six 3s and poured in 26 points, as the unbeaten Panthers (15-0, 10-0) rolled the Colts (0-10 MVL) in a Muskingum Valley League crossover.

Alex Bobb had eight of his 18 points in the first quarter, while Jarrett added seven and Wesley Armstead added five to stake Maysville to a 27-6 cushion.

The lead grew to 53-14 at the half, as Jarrett hit four 3s in the second.

Sammy Scott and Cole Roberts added nine points apiece and Armstead had seven, as 11 Panthers contributed points.

Dayne Singleton scored 16 to pace Meadowbrook.

Coshocton 76, Philo 70: Colton Conkle had a career night with 34 points on 12-of-17 shooting, as the host Redskins (6-7, 3-7) outlasted the Electrics in a high-scoring affair at The Wigwam.

Conkle also made 5 of 8 behind the arc, as Coshocton was 8 of 17 on 3s and 23 of 39 from the field. The team also made 22 of 29 free throws.

Coby Moore collected 19 points, including a 7-of-8 effort at the stripe and JJ Herman had 10 points and six assists for the Redskins, who led 17-10 through one quarter and 38-24 at the half. Conkle also had four steals and Antwone Johns grabbed three steals.

Cade Searls scored 25 points with four 3s for the Electrics (4-10, 4-6), who were just 10-of-27 shooting in the first half. They finished 27 of 68 from the floor and 6 of 28 behind the arc.

Demetrius Strickland chipped in 15 points, seven boards and four assists, Talon Preston had a double-double of 11 points and 13 boards and Cooper Radcliffe added 11 points and six assists for Philo, which trailed 53-47 going to the fourth.

John Glenn 63, Morgan 43: Kaiden Walls and Nathan Walker scored 15 points and the Muskies (8-6, 6-3 MVL-Big) scored 22 first-quarter points in a blowout win in an MVL crossover in McConnelsville.

Walls, a guard, scored 13 of his points in the first half, which included 10 and a pair of 3s in the second quarter. He accounted for all but two Muskie points in the frame, as they took a 34-22 lead into halftime.

Bexlee Woodard knocked down a pair of third-quarter 3s, part of an 18-point showing for John Glenn that extended the margin to 52-35. Walker had nine points after halftime, including a three-point play among his seven in the fourth quarter.

Woodard finished with 11 points — all in the first three quarters. Walls and Woodard combined for six of the team's eight 3-pointers.

Carson Mummey was the lone Raider in double figures with 14 points. Kooper Cain scored all eight of his markers in the second quarter, when Morgan (5-9, 4-6 MVL-Small) trimmed a 22-7 deficit after a quarter to 12.

The Raiders were outscored 24-6 on 3s.

John Glenn took the reserve affair, 53-35. Justin Stambus has 12 points and J.T. Orecchio and Noah Dever eight each for the Muskies; Tavian Myers tallied 11 and Gavin Shriver seven for Morgan.

River View 66, Crooksville 54: Owen Emig drilled five 3s and made 6 of 10 free throws as part of a 35-point night, sending the Black Bears (6-9, 2-7) past the host Ceramics in crossover action.

Crooksville (3-12, 1-9) led 12-11 through one quarter behind 3s by Konlan McIntyre and Clay Burns and nine combined points from McIntyre, who had a team-high 16 points, and Vaughn Childress in the second quarter helped key it tied at 22 at the half.

Emig found his shooting touch in the third, pouring in 15 points with a pair of 3s, while Ryan Moore countered with 10 of his 15 points, including a pair of 3s in the stanza for the Ceramics, as River View led 43-42 going to the fourth.

Emig had 10 in the fourth, including 3 of 4 from the line, and Laired Williamson made 4 of 6 at the stripe to help seal the win.

Layton Massie added 15 points and Williamson eight for the Black Bears, while Childress totaled 10 for the Ceramics.

Girls Basketball

Rosecrans 51, Fairfield Christian 24: Alaina Berry led four Bishops in double figures with 14 points, as they picked up a Mid-State League Cardinal Division win with their pink jerseys for "Shoot the Cure" Night at Rogge Gymnasium.

Jenna McLaughlin posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, Maddie Bernett scored a season-high 12 points and Ella Lambert had 10 for Rosecrans, which improved to 10-7 overall.

McLaughlin had four points in a 13-0 first quarter, while Berry scored 11 in the second, as the Bishops took a 30-3 halftime lead. The Knights didn't score until 3:02 left in the second quarter.

Rosecrans, which led 43-10 after three quarters, made 22 of 55 field goals and held a 38-24 advantage on the board. Bernett and Berry had seven rebounds apiece, and McLaughlin and Berry grabbed four steals each in forcing 26 FCA turnovers.

Madison Clauss had 10 points and Nakayla Cash added seven for the Knights.

Swimming

Area teams compete at OU: Maysville, Philo, Rosecrans and Crooksville had swimmers compete with Athens and Fairfield Union on Friday.

Maysville's Tillman Hawk won the boys 200 free in 2:15.34 with teammate Elijah Mayle second (2:24.12), Hawk also captured the 500 free (5:54), Owen Rusnak placed second in the boys 50 free (25.33) and 500 free (6:12), Brooklyn Ponish took third in the girls 200 free (2:42) and Ponish, Claire Heiney, Bailey Paskell and Alissa Jinkens were second in the 400 free relay (5:54).

Crooksville's Ryleigh Crooks won the girls 100 fly (1:08.07) and came in second in the 100 back (1:07.84); Rosecrans' Ethan Wofel came in second in the boys 100 free (1:07.97) and Emily Ward took third in the 50 free (31.56) and 100 free (1:10.99); and Philo's Mason Wooley came in third in the boys 100 free (1:08.98) to highlight other top finishers.

Middle School Basketball

Sheridan eighth grade girls (12-1) defeated Philo (10-3), 34-20. Leaders for Sheridan were Hailey Mueller with 11 points and Morgan Tingler 10. For Philo, Emily Stockdale scored 10. In seventh grade play, Sheridan (10-2) defeated Philo (10-3), 28-27. Lakelyn Haas and Nora Cooperider had eight each for Sheridan. Leading Philo was Reagan Miller with nine and Paige Stockdale with seven.
