HS SOFTBALL: Summa runs HR streak to four in West Scranton win

May 16—SCRANTON — Excuse West Scranton's Isabella Summa if she'd prefer to play the rest of her career at Connell Park.

After homering in her final three at-bats last season, part of a seven-RBI game in a 12-0 win at Scranton Prep, the senior catcher extended that streak in Monday's Lackawanna League Division I matchup.

Summa hit a laser over the left-center field fence to lead off the game, which ended in another 12-0 victory for West over Prep, the game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

"I've kind of been in a slump lately, so leading off with a home run, it really changed my mindset and knew that we were going to come out swinging," Summa said.

Her second leadoff homer of the season set the tone as West scored four times in the first.

"It was a 3-2 count so I was looking for fastball anywhere that I could make contact because I know I have to get on base as leadoff batter," Summa said. "It felt so good off the bat, so I kind of knew it was gone."

Amelia Noll blistered an RBI single to right and Mia Tallo bashed an RBI single to center. Julia Farkley laid down a safety squeeze for the final run of the first.

Summa wasn't alone in providing the offensive fireworks.

In addition to authoring a two-hit, nine-strikeout performance, Mia Butka bashed a two-run homer, part of a three-RBI day, and the Invaders also played some small ball, scoring twice on a pair of squeeze bunts.

"I don't ever try to hit a home run or anything like that," Butka said. "Anyway I can get on base, whether it's bunting, walking or hitting. I just got a good piece of the ball.

"I'm pretty confident pitching, and then with our team backing me up, you always want to have extra runs in case we have a bad inning."

West coach E.J. Dougher is happy to point out Butka's revamped swing, and knows the defense is playing much better behind her of late.

"Mia has changed her swing to a really nice, easy, level contact swing," Dougher said. "I think Mia has done unbelievable things for West Scranton. If sometimes there is a stumble, it's because she's tried to do everything. Now, she's realized that she can rely on the defense. I don't know if we could have relied on our defense early.

"Now, with practice, practice, practice, she's relying on them more and not thinking she has to strike everybody out."

West's offense continued to build on the lead in the third with three walks, four stolen bases, three wild pitches and singles by Madison May and Mia Keenan.

Trailing by nine, the Classics tried to rally, with Nina Beistline and Alexa Mulrooney both stroking singles. Butka induced a popup and shortstop Noll squeezed it for the final out.

The Invaders tacked on three more in the fifth.

Bianca Markovitch was hit by a pitch, Summa smacked a double and Butka drove left fielder Bella Rinaldi to the fence for a sacrifice fly.

Mia Keenan singled to plate another run, and Tallo's fielder's choice notched her second RBI.
