HS TRACK & FIELD: At Icebreaker Relays, DV, 'Paupack girls tie for title while Mid Valley boys run away with win

Apr. 15—Wallenpaupack and Delaware Valley shared the girls team title, while Mid Valley won the boys championship at the 26th John Tintle Icebreaker Relays on Saturday afternoon at Wallenpaupack High School. Delaware Valley captured the overall girls-boys crown.

Wallenpaupack and Delaware Valley, the leaders in the Lackawanna Track Conference Division II girls standings who will meet Wednesday, both scored 59 points to finish ahead of Abington Heights, which scored 55 1/2 .

Pittston Area, which had 53, finished fourth, and Lakeland, which had 52, finished fifth.

Delaware Valley's throwers, Maddie Gecik (33 feet, 3 inches) and Raina Carr (30-7), won the shot put relay with a total of 63-10. That finished ahead of Wallenpaupack, which checked in at 61-10 and pulled the two teams even in the final team standings.

Delaware Valley's team of Emma Simmons (15.9 seconds), Samantha Shewack (17.79), and Samantha Quinn (19.99) won the 100-meter hurdle relay in a combined time of 53.68 seconds. Wallenpaupack's team of Ella Smith, Darby Brennan, Alexa Kapschull, and Daneille Holzapfel won the 3,200 relay in 10:35.39.

Abington Heights had two relay wins: Reese Morgan, Kaylyn Elliott, Emma Horsley, and Anna Pucilowski won the 3,200 Distance Medley in 8:31.33; and Maggie Coleman, Kaylyn Elliott, Emma Horsley, and Marygrace Sabatini closed out the races on the track with a victory in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:11.20.

Lakeland also had two wins. The Lady Chiefs team of Gabby Martin (49.50), Kaylyn Davis (50.90), and Kaitlyn Passiment (55.25) posted a winning combined time of 2:35.65. Olivia Warholic (105-3) and Anna Liuzzo (105-0) totaled 210-3 to win the discus.

North Pocono came away with wins in the long jump and pole vault. Soyer DeLucy (17-5) and Pia Zangardi (15-4 1/2 ) combined for a total of 32-9.5 in the long jump, while Olivia Bassi (9-0) and Hannah LaFave (8-6) won the pole vault.

Western Wayne's team of Paige Lee (107-9) and Skylar Long (103-0) had a total of 210-9 to win the javelin.

Pittston Area won the triple and high jump relays, and Holy Redeemer won the 400 relay for the Wyoming Valley Conference.

Boys

Mid Valley scored 86 points and took first place in four events, including the final three in the meet. North Pocono finished second with 64 points and Delaware Valley scored 60.

The Spartans team of Cody Michaels (42.22), Shamus Lesher (43.09) and Connor Hughes (48.73) won the 300 hurdles relay in 2:14.04. Shamus Lesher (40-5 1/4 ) and Charles Davey (38-7) won the triple jump at 79-0 1/4 ; Dylan Holt and Jakob Lesher won the high jump with a combined 11-2 height; and the team of Jordan Chmielewski and Shamus Lesher cleared 19-6 to win the pole vault.

Delaware Valley's team of Landon Machado, Ryder Machado, Henry Goginski and Armand Ruest won the 400 relay in 44.11. Honesdale's group of Logan Novobilski, Peter Pham, Mason Avery and Aidan LaTourette won the 3200 Distance Medley in 7:18.26. Abington Heights' team of John Farrell, Jack Sorensen, Sean Rooney and Colin Donahoe claimed the 3,200 relay in 8:34.38.

In the field, Abington Heights' Niko Williams (47-5) and Brandon Lezinski (40-0) won the shot put with a total of 87-5. Wallenpaupack's Ben Ostrowski and Tyler Yakaboski won the discus at 259-9. North Pocono's Nicholas Franceschelli (183-0) and Carson Gibson (123-7) won the javelin at 306-7.

One of the highlights of the meet was North Pocono's Colin Kravitz running the anchor 400-meter leg of the 1,600 relay in 46.8 seconds. Pocono Mountain West held on for the overall win in 3:27.56. Split times are not compared to open races, however, for perspective, the No. 1 time in the state for the 400 this outdoor season is 48.0 by Bensalem's Zyan Greene, according to pa.milesplit.com.
