HS TRACK AND FIELD: Kucharski, Hilling lead Valley View to LTC Division I title

Apr. 26—ARCHBALD — AJ Kucharski and Connor Hilling added another title to their championship senior years.

Kucharski had individual event wins in the 110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and the long jump, and ran a leg of the winning 1,600 relay, while Hilling added wins in the 100 and 200, and as a member of the 400 relay.

Their dominant efforts catapulted Valley View to a 102-48 win over Scranton on Tuesday to secure at least a tie for the Lackawanna Track Conference Division I championship. The Cougars will finish the regular season against Scranton Prep next week. It is the third straight division crown and the 13th overall for the program.

For Kucharski and Hilling, they have been a part of league championship seasons in football, basketball and now track and field in their final year of competition.

"We were just thinking about this ever since the Twilight meet on Friday," Kucharski said. "We knew that we had a chance to win the league. We just came to school and all day long our mentality was to get out, PR (personal record), run fast and we came out on top with the league title."

Valley View, which already has a win over Abington Heights this season, had a big advantage on the track.

Kucharski, who had his best meet of the season, led the way.

He started with a win in the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.57 seconds. He then leaped to a career-best distance of 20 feet, 10 inches to edge teammate Jacob Nielsen, who had a mark of 20-4 3/4 .

"The long jump, all year, my best jump was 20-5," Kucharski said. "All year, my teammate Jacob Nielsen has pushed me every day and we have pushed each other. To go out and jump 20-10 really motivated me even more to go out and run my best in the 300 hurdles."

He carried that momentum into his top event. In the 300 hurdles, Kucharski got out fast and finished strong. He posted another personal-best time, crossing the finish in 41.47 seconds, which is the fastest fully automatic time of the season in the LTC.

"I was super excited," Kucharski said. "Coach (Dan) Berg, who coaches the hurdles, told me that I had a 41 in me today and I just hauled. I got a 41.4 and I will take it."

Hilling, who is finding his rhythm on the sprints, made a late push in both the 100 and 200 to beat Scranton speedster Lamiare Saldano in both. He posted a time of 11.59 against a headwind in the 100, added a 23.06 in the 200 and ran the final 100 meters of the sprint relay that won in a time of 44.04.

"I think this is really rewarding," Hilling said. "Our senior group has been through a lot. This group really grinded through summers and throughout every sports season. For everything to pay off in every sport, is really rewarding and special."

Valley View swept the three relays, and also got wins from Nielsen in the triple jump, Connor Swartz in the 400, Bryce Sokoloski, who ran a personal-best time of 2:04.32 in the 800, Tom Fiorelli in the shot put, Aiden Smith in the discus, Michael Zipay, who had a personal-best throw of 136 feet, 2 inches in the javelin, and Luke Schack, who had a personal-best clearing of 10-6 in the pole vault.

Brian McCormack won the 1,600 and the 3,200, and Izzy Williams won the high jump for Scranton.

Also in Division I, Scranton Prep defeated West Scranton, 75-69.

Gavin Gallagher won the 1,600 and 800, and Adam Einsenhauer won the long jump and tied for first with teammate Shawn Rowell to win the high jump for the Cavaliers.

Taron Knight-Guerrier won the 100 and 400, and Colin Manley won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles for West Scranton.

Peter Stanislavsky won the long, triple and high jumps as Delaware Valley defeated Western Wayne, 136-7, to set up a showdown with North Pocono on May 2 for the LTC Division II championship.

At Honesdale, Aidan LaTourette won the 1,600 and 3,200, and Jeffry Delgado-Santos won the 300 hurdles and 200 to lead the Hornets past Wallenpaupack, 74-72.

In a Division I-II crossover, Abington Heights' team of Jack Sorensen, Jack Farrell, Michael Pirner and Colin Donahue won the 1,600 relay to edge North Pocono.

Niko Williams won the shot and discus, and Noe Biteau won the long and triple jumps for the Comets.

Colin Kravitz won the 100, 200 and 400, and Aiden Horne won the 1,600 and 3,200 for North Pocono.

In Division IV, Kendal Jones won the 1,600 and 3,200, Dylan Way won the 400 and 800, and Wyatt Johnson won the long and triple jumps to lead Elk Lake to a 68-61 win over Lackawanna Trail.

Cole Schirg won the shot and discus for Lackawanna Trail.

Wallenpaupack remained undefeated a clinched a tie for the Division II title with a 93-56 win over Honesdale.

The Lady Buckhorns, who finish the season against Western Wayne, have won three straight championships and 11 overall.

Abigail Kimler won the 100 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the high jump, while Darby Brennan won the 1,600 and 800, and Grace Steffen won the shot and discus for the Lady Buckhorns.

At Delaware Valley, Emma Simmons won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Liliana Coe won the 100 and 200, Ryan O'Connor won the 800 and 3,200, and Fiona Ring won the long and triple jumps to lead the Lady Warriors past Western Wayne, 115-35.

At Valley View, Riley Hilling won the 300 hurdles, Megan Brown won the discus, Emma Miller won the javelin and Giada Costa won the long jump to lead Valley View past Scranton in Division I.

Bella Noreika won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, while Eliza Mitchell won the 100 hurdles and 100, and Kamryn Alers won the triple and high jumps for Scranton.

At West Scranton, Emily Stefani won the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, and Alaina Cigliano won the 100 and 200 to lead the Lady Invaders to a 104-36 win over Scranton Prep.

At North Pocono, Madison Zalewski set a school record with a throw of 116-11 in the javelin and added a win in the high jump to lead undefeated Abington Heights past the Lady Trojans, 100-50, in a Division I-II crossover meet.

Maggie Coleman also added wins in the 100 and 200 for Abington Heights.

Norah Wolff won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and Emily Franklin won the 1,600 and 3,200 for North Pocono.

Emma Cuck won the 1,600 and 800 for Scranton Prep.

At Lackawanna Trail, Elk Lake's Danica Wagner won the 100, 200 and long jump and Sydney Upright won the 400 and triple jump in a 73-51 win over the Lady Lions.

Sophia Kazmierczak won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles for Lackawanna Trail.
