HS WRESTLING: Martin, Avery lift Honesdale over Western Wayne

Jan. 4—S. CANAAN TWP. — After two straight Western Wayne pins, T.J. Martin knew he needed to swing the momentum.

Trailing by two points after Tyler Barletta secured an opening takedown, the Honesdale senior escaped, pinned Barletta and put his finger over his lips to silence the crowd at Western Wayne High School.

The first-period fall quieted the Wildcats and propelled the Hornets to a 49-21 victory Wednesday night in a Lackawanna League Division II wrestling match.

"After that first takedown he got on me, I don't know what I was doing there but it fired me up," Martin said of his 145-pound bout. "I caught that cradle on him and I drove in, but then he broke the cradle, but I just leaned into him and I pinned him."

Brett Hoey (114) earned a major decision over Lexi DeSiato before Justin Scanlon (121) and Josh Young (127) pinned Marcello Caminiti and Landon Morcom to give Honesdale (2-0) a 16-0 lead.

"Lexi is very tough. She had beaten (Hoey) twice last year so that was great to avenge that," Honesdale coach Ryan Chulada said. "Scanlon at 121 is a tough freshman for us, but (Caminiti) is not an easy out. Josh Young as a senior at 127 went out and kind of set the tone coming through the middle."

Liam Farley (133) and Michael Smith (139) rallied Western Wayne with back-to-back pins over Braden McLaughlin and Chucky Moran to cut the deficit to 16-12. With two tough Western Wayne (0-1) wrestlers on deck, Martin made sure to increase the lead.

"I was just going out there and executing my moves and working to get the match over with as quick as possible," Martin said.

Western Wayne's Jake Leslie (152) battled back from a five-point deficit to top Joey Giannetti, 6-5, and cut the Honesdale lead to 22-15 before Mason Avery (160) shut the door.

The Hornets sophomore fell behind, 3-0, in the first period after a Nick Arcadipane takedown and an unsportsmanlike point. He rallied with an escape and two takedowns to take a 5-4 advantage.

"I just realized that I'm still in this and it's only the first period so I know I could keep going and going and going and not give up," Avery said.

After riding out Arcadipane in the second period, Avery secured a reversal and two back points for a 9-4 decision to give the Hornets a 25-15 lead.

"We do really hard practices," Avery said. "I knew if I went in there and kept attacking, attacking, attacking, I would get it done."

Joel Landry (172), Paul Renner (215) and Aaron Phillips (285) pinned Addy Pruss, Hunter Reichlong and Paul Borowski and a Western Wayne forfeit at 189 stretched the Honesdale lead to 49-15. Western Wayne's Vinny Tomasetti (107) pinned Sam Eisele in the first period to close out the match.

"I think we wrestled well," Western Wayne coach Josh Harrison said. "A lot of our lighter and middleweights went out and competed. A couple kids got caught, but against a good team like that, it's bound to happen."

Honesdale and Western Wayne have two of the 90 girls wrestling teams in the state, and competed in six exhibition bouts. Saige Olver had two pins to lead Honesdale to a 24-12 win. Honesdale's Roz Mikulak and Sydney Roberts also added pins for the Lady Hornets.

Summer Pugh and Katelyn Nunez had pins for Western Wayne.
