Huawei world's top phone maker, despite U.S. woes

Despite all its battles with countries like the U.S., UK and Australia, Huawei has something to celebrate.

It has now snatched the title of world’s biggest smartphone maker from Samsung.

Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices over the quarter to June, according to research firm Canalys.

That beats Samsung’s 53.7 million.

The Chinese firm has seen international sales hobbled by U.S. sanctions.

They have limited its access to chips and software including Google apps.

But Huawei still took the title thanks to robust sales in its home market, where demand has recovered faster than elsewhere.

Overall, its sales were still down on the year, by 5%.

But that beat the 30% plunge at its South Korean rival.

Huawei may not wear the crown for long though.

One insider told Reuters that the firm could lose top spot as international markets recover.
