Hudson Area Schools cancels classes Friday after receiving, investigating threat

HUDSON — Hudson Area Schools canceled all classes districtwide Friday after district officials said they were made aware of rumors of a potential threat made to the district.

Hudson Superintendent Michael Osborne said the alleged threat made late Thursday is being investigated and it appears the threat is a continuation of another threat made earlier in the week.

“It’s unfortunate these rumors continued,” he said Friday afternoon.

The initial threat made this week, Osborne said, was from one student to another student. Investigation into that incident found there to be no harm to students, staff or the district.

Thursday’s alleged threat, meanwhile, was from a student to the entire district. Because the threat was intercepted at night by the state's OK2SAY tip hotline, school officials said they were unable to fully investigate the threat and the safest precaution would be to cancel all classes Friday.

Hudson Area Schools was scheduled to have a half-day of classes Friday.

“The timing of when the threat was reported was late last night (Thursday),” Osborne said. “We felt it would be very challenging or confusing to families in communicating the situation to them at that time, which is why we decided to cancel school.”

Because the investigation had not yet been completed as of Friday afternoon, Osborne said the district and the Hudson Police Department has been unable to prove or disprove the threat was legitimate.

Osborne credited the police department for its involvement with the district throughout the week as well as crediting parents for their patience and cooperation.

After-school and weekend activities that were scheduled for Friday and Saturday are still going on as planned, Osborne said.

“I don’t see us having any problems working through the situation,” he said. “We have enough confidence that the situation will be taken care of and we can return to classes on Monday.”
