HUDSON — The residents of 138 Lafayette St. in Hudson narrowly escaped from their home as it burst into flames in the twilight hours Monday, Oct. 9.

The Hudson Fire Department was dispatched to a fully engulfed structure fire at the address at 2 a.m. and immediately requested mutual aid for additional resources.

Hudson Fire Chief Jerry Tanner said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Within a half-hour of firefighters' arrival, the home began to suffer from a structural collapse and firefighters transitioned to a defensive posture after accounting for the residents of the home.

An active natural gas line provided additional fuel and hampered fire suppression efforts, Tanner said, and Michigan Gas Utilities was called in to mitigate the issue.

Tanner called the fire under control at 6:15 a.m. and extinguished by 7:10 a.m.; damage was estimated at $80,000.

The American Red Cross was called in to provide resources to the family who declined comment to The Hillsdale Daily News Monday morning.

Firefighters and equipment from Addison, Clayton, Jefferson Township, Morenci and Wright-Waldron assisted the Hudson Fire Department, and Hudson Area Ambulance provided for firefighter rehab.
